Ortega Professor Ortega's research interests include colonial and late colonial Latin America, the role of the intellectual in colonial societies, representations of race and ethnicity, and literature and ethics. He is currently completing a book-length manuscript titled, "The Anxieties of Trauma: Representations of Disaster in Colonial Contemporary Latin America. An Essay in Catastrophic Reading." His most current research - The Role of the Creole Intellectual During Times of Crisis (1750-1825) - seeks to elaborate a theoretical framework for understanding the social and cultural functioning of the Creole intellectual in eighteenth century Latin America.
