CURRENT UNDERGRADUATE COURSES (Fall 2002, Spring 2003)

English 417: Shakespeare to 1600
Dubrow

The course engages with six plays Shakespeare wrote before 1600, as well as with his sonnets. We will discuss a range of issues, from the stylistic and generic workings of the plays to their engagement with cultural tensions about such arenas as national politics and gender. We will also frequently discuss questions of performance and production. Like most of my undergraduate courses, this one will be based on a combination of discussion (including small-group workshops) and lecture. It will emphasize enhancing one’s skills in analyzing and writing about literature; for instance, to encourage the class members to develop their own ideas rather than simply repeating mine, we will have a system of email exchanges. In part because students who know each other and me tend to work together more productively, the group will get together for one or two pizza parties and if feasible a theater party to see a Shakespeare production and/or Shakespeare films.

English 420: English literature 1600-1660
Dubrow

We will read a range of poetry and prose from the period (drama is covered in a separate course), including the extraordinary love and religious poems of John Donne, the spiritual writings of George Herbert, the lyrics in which Lady Mary Wroth exemplifies and negotiates the complexities of establishing a female voice in a male tradition, the scientific writings of Sir Thomas Browne, early works by Milton, and so on. Our discussions will attempt to position the texts in both social and cultural contexts, emphasizing, for example, their relationship to the religious controversies of the period and the impending civil war.
