INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM : SUBLIME AND GROTESQUE

DATE:  April 20-21, 2012 at the Pyle Center

Sublime and Grotesque

The aim of the symposium is to analyze the intersection of two major categories of European esthetics: the sublime and the grotesque, considered not as two discrete phenomena, but as a unique and quite specific conjunction of apparently opposed artistic forms. This esthetic coincidentia oppositorum will be examined in a series of case studies ranging from the 16th to the 21st centuries; encompassing literature, art and philosophy; and stemming from three different national cultures: France, Germany and England.

The focus of the debate will be on what is at the core of literary studies: the history of literary esthetics. In its scope, the symposium will be interdisciplinary (literature and philosophy), as well as comparatist (French, German, English literatures).
