This lesson is based on two clips about the difficulties of establishing priorities for women in Russian and Soviet society, and the personal versus the ideological for both men and women.  Students work with words that signal importance and problematic agreement.

Lesson 2: Problems of Equality

This lesson consists of one clip from the interview with Maria Tendriakova and one from the interview with Irina Khakamada.  Students are asked to compare their views about women.  Students also work with interpretations of ambiguous statements and compare their perspectives to others’.

This lesson contains two clips about the different branches of the Orthodox Church and the periods of repression and freedom that the church went through during the Soviet period.  Students also learn about some of the differences between Orthodoxy and other Christian faiths and some of the concerns of the church today.  They also work with rhetorical structure and hypothesis.

This lesson focuses on minority ethnic and religious groups in Russia and the controversy about the nationality section of the passport, based on two clips.  Students also work with information presented in different forms, such as a map and a pie chart.
