Graduate Program in Japanese Linguistics |
|
Admissions To be considered for admission, the student should have the equivalent of a B.A. major in Japanese from the University of Wisconsin. Applicants lacking this qualification but of superior caliber will be admitted conditionally. Improving one’s language proficiency is not the primary aim of this MA program. Candidates need to demonstrate their clear interests in Japanese linguistics, language pedagogy, or second language acquisition. Only those students whose achievement in the M.A. program is considered superior (as determined by the faculty committee on the basis of the course record and M.A. examination results) are eligible to enter the Ph.D. program. Students applying for the Ph.D. program with an M.A. in Japanese from another institution will be given a qualifying examination during their first year in residence to determine their eligibility for the Ph.D. program. Students applying for the Ph.D. program with an M.A. in other areas such as general linguistics, TESOL, foreign language education are not eligible to enter the Ph.D. program: they need to complete our MA program first. There have been many students who entered our program to pursue their second MA degree.
